International Women in Engineering Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women who have shaped our profession, but it is also a chance to think about how we can encourage those who are just beginning their own journey.
When we think about role models, we often picture famous engineers or leaders at the top of their careers. They are important, and their stories deserve to be celebrated. But over the years, I have come to realise that some of the most influential people are the everyday cheerleaders who quietly encourage others to keep going.
A teacher who notices potential.
A colleague who offers encouragement after a difficult day.
A mentor who reminds someone that they are capable.
A parent who says, "Why not give engineering a try?"
These moments may seem small, but they can change the direction of someone's life.
Looking back, I know they certainly made a difference to mine. There were times when I questioned whether engineering was the right place for me, and it was often the encouragement of others that helped me continue. Their belief came before my own confidence did.
That is one of the reasons International Women in Engineering Day means so much to me. It is not only about celebrating what women have achieved, but also about inspiring the next generation to imagine themselves in engineering.
Over the past few months, I have been fortunate to be involved in a project celebrating women in engineering by sharing their stories and experiences. Reading those profiles has been a wonderful reminder that there is no single route into engineering and no single type of engineer. Every journey is different, but one thing appears again and again: someone, somewhere, offered encouragement at the right moment.
Perhaps that is something all of us can do.
We do not all have to organise events, give keynote talks, or lead major projects to make a difference. Sometimes simply encouraging a student, supporting a colleague, or sharing our own experiences is enough to help someone believe they belong.
Engineering has always been about solving problems and building a better future. One of the best ways we can do that is by helping build confidence in the people who will shape that future.

This International Women in Engineering Day, let's celebrate the women who inspire us, but let's also remember the quieter role we can all play.
You never know when a few words of encouragement might become the reason someone chooses to stay in engineering.
